Overrunning clutches are used in mechanical transmissions to prevent transmission of torque from the driven shaft to the drive shaft. This function is needed if the driven shaft for some reason starts to rotate faster than the driving one. The product is also called a freewheel clutch. It consists of an outer and inner cage, between which there are locking rollers or spring-loaded balls or petals resting against the outer ring.
